Reimagine What Matters Most
Presentation by Marika Sandrelli and Mark Goheen
This province is entering its third year of a public health emergency that has shown no signs of diminishing since the Provincial Health Officer declared overdoses a provincial crisis in April 2016. We are learning that access to life-saving naloxone, expanding harm reduction services and offering more treatment options are necessary, but appear to be not enough. Something is missing. The overdose crisis is teaching us that physical and psychological pain, as well as social pain are significant factors in whether someone will seek and receive help. This includes how service providers talk about harm reduction and how they arrive in the lives of people who use substances in a way that doesn’t further social distancing and disqualifying. This presentation will feature a reflecting team as a definitional ceremony, made up of service providers who are responding to the overdose crisis who will humbly share their learning including the effects of psychological and social pain and what can be done to prevent and mitigate this contributor to overdose risk. Those present will be asked to witness this team’s sharing, then provide reflections of their own experiences.
